There are three departments at the Faculty:

Students reconstruct the daily life of people in the Middle Ages
«Cognitive, semiotic, linguistic and cultural studies» (leading scholar N.F. Alefirenko, PhD in philology, professor, Honored Scholar of the Russian Federation).
«Language and style of family ancestries» (leading scholar V.K. Kharchenko, PhD in philology, professor).
«The evolution of social class structure of the Russian Empire (by example of Central Black Earth Region)» (leading scholar V.A. Shapovalov, PhD in history, professor).
«Classical and Byzantine tradition» (leading scholar N.N. Bolgov, PhD in history, professor).
Nikolay F. Alefirenko, professor of the Department of philology, Honored Scholar of the Russian Federation, head of the scientific direction «Cognitive, semiotic, linguistic and cultural studies». Under his supervision, 36 candidate and 24 doctoral dissertations were defended. He published more than 400 works, including 23 monographs.
Vera K. Kharchenko, PhD in Philology, professor, Head of the Department of Philology. Trained 2 PhD and 15 candidates of sciences; published 555 scientific works, including 39 books (monographs, textbooks, dictionaries), eight of which were reissued 2-4 times. For the «Dictionary of the wealth of the Russian language: in 2 volumes» was awarded a silver medal of the All-Russia Exhibition Centre (VDNKh). She compiled an archive of family pedigrees in 30 volumes. Awarded the Medal of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, where she taught Russian language, and the medal «For Service to the Land of Belgorod», II degree.
Vladimir A. Shapovalov, professor of Department of Russian History and document management. 13 candidate and 1 doctoral dissertations were created under his supervision. He published over 100 scientific papers, including 3 monographs.
Nikolay N. Bolgov, professor of the Department of General History. 16 candidate and 2 doctoral dissertations were created under his supervision. He published over 300 scientific papers, including 15 monographs.
Faculty scholars repeatedly won various grants. Over the past 10 years, the research teams of the Faculty have received over 6 million rubles in grants. Among the important research projects are «Cognitive discourse strategy of modern linguistics» (head N.F. Alefirenko), «Russian particles: pragmatics and functioning» (head I.A. Nagorny), «Dialectal and regional words in the speech of residents of Belgorod in the 20th-21st centuries» (head S.A. Kosharnaya), «Man in transition eras: Late Antique – Early Byzantine» (head N.N. Bolgov).
Archaeological field research is actively conducted. Early Medieval archaeological expedition of BSU has been working on various sites of Saltovo-Mayaki culture in the Belgorod region since 2001. Necropolises in Valuisky, Borisov, Belgorod and other districts have been explored. Since 1979 to the present students of the Faculty form the bulk of the Citea archaeological expedition in Crimea. Since 2001 Belgorod detachment of the East Crimean expedition of the Institute of Archaeology at Academy of Sciences is active, and since 2012 a «Phratria» detachment of the same expedition.

The faculty publishes two scientific journals.
«Via in tempore History and Political Science”, since 2008 has been included in the List of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation of peer-reviewed scientific publications, in which the fundamental scientific results of dissertations for the scientific degrees of candidate and doctor of science. The second journal "TRACTUS AEVORUM: The Evolution of Socio-Cultural and Political Spaces" is publishing since 2014 included in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI).
The annual youth scientific forum "Belgorod Dialogue" attracts a significant number of young researchers from Russia and abroad.
The Department of General History holds a number of international scientific conferences that have gained wide popularity, including "Kondakov's readings" (since 2004), "Classical and Byzantine tradition" (since 2007). The XXI All-Russian session of Byzantine scholars was held in April 2016, based on the faculty and the scientific direction "Classical and Byzantine tradition". The Belgorod branch of the "Byzantine Club" was opened - a socio-political project whose mission is to form a new ideological agenda for the revival of civilizational identity, both in Russia and abroad.
