A science-to practice conference “United Nations: past, present, future” took place at BelSU
International Conference for lawyers, UN representatives, scientists and practitioners fr om universities was dedicated to the 70th Anniversary of United Nations. It was organized by BelSU Institute of Law, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland), St. Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo (Bulgaria) and he Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Russian Federation.
The conference was opened by Deputy chairman of Organizing Committee, Director of BelSU Institute of Law, honored lawyer of Russian Federation Prof. Evgeniy Tonkov, D. J. S. He said, particularly, that basic principles of peaceful coexistence of states were articulated by Immanuel Kant in “Perpetual Peace” (1795). According to these ideas, United Nations Charter distinctly defined common principles and goals of International Law, but the question is: how does it influence the real regulation of social relations?
First Provost Prof. Tatiana Balabanova, Doctor of Economy, greeted the participants from the name of BelSU Principal’s Office. She told about the University and its achievements in science, education, culture and International Relations. She also mentioned that BelSU labors to become a global university and interact with leading organizations of the world.
“We have already signed a number of treaties with UN representatives and discussed further activities for the BelSU’s connection to UN. This conference is one of those steps to the World level”, – she said.
The first Deputy Chairman of Belgorod Regional Duma Aleksandr Sklyarov addressed to the audience from the name of Belgorod Region’s Governor and legislative body of the region. He said, that in a modern world, wh ere the borders between national and international are not so distinct anymore, the problems of society should have been resolving together.
Aleksandr Panin, Comissioner for Human Rights in Belgorod Region has also taken part in the conference. He said that its results can help scientific society to work at improvement of the world’s situation.
At the plenary meeting, some of the participants gave their presentations about the role of United Nations and the universities in society. The representative of The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Bayisa Wak-Woya especially highlighted the humanitarian aspects of UN’s activities and a role of The Office in international politics.
The scientists also discussed the cultural and dynamics of modern society’s development and immediate problems of International Law.
