Amphoras, bones and a huge frying pan

In 2017 students worked in four archaeological expeditions – in the Belgorod region and in the Crimea.

25 first-year students of an BelSU historical and philological department and volunteers from among students and graduates have gone to an expedition. Belgorod group was leaded by the associate professor of world history of BelSU Elena Semicheva.

"The expedition lasted three weeks, it’s a standard for field practice. We found the part of the street of the ancient settlement – flag-stones with which it was paved in the ancient time. We have dug out several rooms built, apparently, in the Hellenistic time. It I was a “chora” (the agricultural territory of antique cities) of Bosporus – the state which existed in the territory of the Kerch and Taman peninsulas in the 5-6th centuries AD. We have found fragments of amphoras with brands from Rhodes, quite interesting ceramic lamp, fragments the of Megara bowls with a relief ornament, parts of the black-glazed ware", – Elena Aleksandrovna tells

One more group of Belgorod students has joined expedition group “Fratria” and worked in the wildlife refuge Syuyurtash at the coast of Azov, at other monument – the Golden East ancient settlement. From July 18 to July 30 the national team of students and volunteers dug out the ancient settlement of the 3-2nd centuries BC. According to the head of “Fratria” – the associate professor of world history of BelSU Sergey Prokopenko, it was the settlement of crisis times.

The Belgorod archeologists worked not only on Azov, but also at the Black Sea coast of the Kerch Peninsula. They have excavated the antique ancient settlement Kitey. According to the head of the department of world history, professor of BelSU Nikolay Bolgov, who leaded the Belgorod group of the Kitey expedition, in due time archaeological practice at the faculty has begun with Kitey excavation.

In spite of the fact that the whole three Belgorod expeditions work at the sea coast, the bulk of first-year students of historical and philological faculty of BelSU undergoes obligatory archaeological practice as part of the Early medieval archaeological expedition in Belgorod region. This year more than 50 students of the university participated in excavation at the Beliy Plyos village of Veydelevsky district. The associate professor of the Russian history and document science of the university Vladimir Sarapulkin leaded the excavation.
