RAEX Analytica (The Expert Ratings Agency) has published its seventh annual rating of Russian universities. The comprehensive rating is produced using statistical analysis and survey data from 30,000 science academics, as well as students, graduates and employers
The top three are Moscow State University, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and the National Nuclear Research University MEPhI. Belgorod National Research University rose 8 places from 59th to 51st.
RAEX Analytica noted that the rapid changes inherent in modern society and real-time technological advance create tangible difficulties when planning the development of university courses. Questions around which professions will be in demand in the medium term, and where real scientific breakthroughs are possible, are becoming more difficult to answer. This growing uncertainty, feeds into the debate on prospects for specialist universities. A narrow specialisation runs in contradiction to the current trend in scientific research theory, namely that new ideas and inventions are born at the intersection of different scientific disciplines. This interdisciplinary approach is not only important for research, but also for university graduates. A qualified economist with a foundation in fundamental mathematics, or an IT specialist who understands business procedures will have a better chance of building a successful career than a graduate with a narrow specialisation. Professor Oleg Polukhin, Rector of BNRU, commented on the results, saying,
“Judging by the analysis from the Expert Ratings Agency, BNRU has, by focusing on the interdisciplinary approach to education, chosen the right development path. We give students the opportunity to simultaneously master two specialties, using traditional teaching and new methods, including online distance learning. Our rapid development is also evidenced by the recent Interfax National University Rankings, where we made the Top 50 best Russian universities, placing 20th.”
