Our University teamed up with the Regional Office of the Central Bank of Russia (CBR) to conduct a series of open lectures and seminars aimed at increasing the financial literacy of all students
Dr Oksana Vaganova, Head of the University's Department of Finance, Investments and Innovations, opened proceedings by noting that recently financial regulators in many countries have been paying close attention to the issue of public education, and that this event formed part of their campaign to familiarise the general public with the processes and risks involved in investing in the financial markets. This was a good opportunity for students, and the University in general, to pick the brains of the leading state financiers in the Region.
Vladimir Yanovsky, Head of the Financial Market Development Department at the Regional Office of the CBR, gave a lecture on 'The Competent Investor in the Financial Market'. He talked about the concept of investment, the main types of investment products and their inherent risks, and the rights of investors. He said that a competent investor needs to constantly monitor their investments, learn all about the investment, and evaluate the risks. He advised investors to choose an investment strategy based on their needs and goals, and also to remember that a profitable investment is usually long-term, and involves a diversified portfolio. The subject of particular interest to the audience was the issue of protecting investor rights. Mr Yanovsky explained the basic rules of behaviour in the financial market that should prevent bad situations arising, but went on to describe the regulatory framework and the arbitration and appeals process. He then fielded questions from the audience.
