Elizaveta Kuravina, a 4th year journalism student from Belgorod State University, beat 18 other finalists, including her classmate Irina Tkacheva, to win the National Student Journalism Competition
The finals were hosted by Tomsk University, and the field had been whittled down from the 150 students who had entered from Regions and cities across the country. The finals involved different stages. They were tasked with writing an essay on the subject, 'Yandex Journalism (When will bylined articles die?)', and there were theoretical questions in a similar vein. They also had to come up with headlines for articles that ran the gamut of the press, from tabloids to popular science. Ms Kuravina accumulated the most points out of 1000, as assessed by an expert panel, and therefore won top spot. It was a great experience for her, she commented,
“All the participants were very strong. Many of them already work for well-known media outlets. For me, the victory is as important as the days spent in an exciting new city, and the opportunity to meet talented fellow journalists.”
