International Neuroscience Summer School

Dr Mamatov welcomed the participants, stressing the importance of this type of event in encouraging research project and forming positive links with academics around the world. He talked about how the experience of exchanging ideas with scientists with differing perspectives, stimulates our own students. He hoped that this would be the first of many such events.

Professor Sitnikova then introduced the program and talked a little on the challenges she faced getting to this point. She then kicked off the program, lecturing on 'The Brain and Cognition', which dealt with the technology used in studying the brain and the peripheral nervous system. After that Kristina Artyomenko and Mojtaba Soltanlou, from the University of Tübingen in Germany, presented the results of their research on patterns of electrical stimulation in the brain while the subject was solving mathematical problems. Ms Artyomenko also walked participants through the process of publishing a scientific article. Dr Andreas Hartung, of the Institut Wohnen und Umwelt in Darmstadt in Germany, spoke on the various methods of statistical data analysis. Professor German Nemirovski, from Albstadt-Sigmaringen University in Germany, then demonstrated the Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscope, the primary tool for measuring brain response. He showed the students how to track neural pathways, and how to get the most from the equipment.
