Students from the Medical Institute and the Institute of Pharmacy, Chemistry and Biology of Belgorod State University took part in the All-Russian School-Conference of Young Scientists and Students.
The Genetic Technologies in the Study of Natural Compounds scientific event was held at the Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok. The School-Conference attracted more than 130 young and experienced scientists from all over the country. BelSU was represented by four young researchers – postgraduate students of the Medical Institute Elena Kuzubova, Nikita Lyakhovchenko, Alexandra Radchenko and Anna Chepurina, a master's student of the Institute of Pharmacy, Chemistry and Biology.
Elena Kuzubova took first place, receiving a diploma in the “Bioinformatics and comparative genomics – a source of new genetic tools and technologies” section. Her report “The use of a two-vector system based on an adeno-associated virus for gene therapy of Miyoshi myopathy in the B6.A-Dysfprmd/GeneJ mouse model” was highly appreciated.
Nikita Lyakhovchenko also made a report, revealing the topic “Bacteriostatic activity of a pigment extract of microbial origin against the test culture of Clavibacter michiganesis,” and his colleague Alexandra Radchenko spoke about studying the properties of peptides for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease using the transgenic mouse model APPswe/PS1dE9/Blg.
Within the framework of the school-conference young scientists not only presented the results of their research, but also obtained new useful practical skills by attending master classes on “Determination of absolute concentrations of nucleic acids without using calibration strands” and “PCR with real-time detection of results as the main modern method for gene expression analysis” under the guidance of leading experts from the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“The School-Conference allowed us to understand the main directions of work of scientific teams in the field of molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry and bioinformatics. Thanks to this event, we were able to exchange experience in conducting research, find new common ground for scientific cooperation, as well as trajectories for our own growth and development,” said Anna Chepurina.
For reference: The Elyakov Pacific Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences conducts research in the field of bioorganic chemistry, biochemistry, molecular immunology, organic synthesis of natural compounds, marine microbiology, taxonomy of higher plants and biotechnology. The objects of research are marine organisms of the Ocean (including microorganisms) and unique terrestrial plants of the Russian Far East. The Institute studies all main classes of biomolecules: proteins, including enzymes, nucleic acids (primarily genes that carry information about important enzymes), carbohydrates, lipids and various low-molecular bioregulators.
