On January 21, Russia and several other countries celebrated Postgraduate Student Day, a date commemorating the publication of documents in 1925 that established the framework for training scientific workers.
Currently, Belgorod State University boasts over 1,000 postgraduate students, including 108 international scholars from 32 different countries. This year, the university has allocated 185 state-funded positions for postgraduate admissions.
The postgraduate programme offers full-time studies across 69 scientific specialties, with 80% of these fields granting access to independent dissertation councils at Belgorod State University, which are responsible for awarding academic degrees. Presently, there are 21 active dissertation councils at the university, including two that are consolidated.
‘In light of the university’s transformation, we are prioritizing the development of industrial postgraduate studies,’ noted Evgeniya Karlovskaya, rector of BelSU. "This approach fosters collaboration between students and industrial partners, allowing postgraduate students to pursue dissertations aligned with research projects from these partners. This not only enhances their entrepreneurial skills but also equips them with competencies essential for advancing their careers in the real economy."
According to Evgeniya Karlovskaya, the university’s administration is committed to expanding opportunities for young researchers within the postgraduate programme.
Inna Buinyakova, Director of the Department for Training and Certification of Scientific and Teaching Staff, highlighted the success of programmes designed to train scientific and teaching personnel. These programmes encourage early engagement with dissertation work, paving the way for academic careers at Belgorod State University. The university also offers integrated programmes that combine a Master’s degree with postgraduate studies, facilitating master’s students’ involvement in research activities.
Belgorod State University has successfully implemented a networked approach to its postgraduate programmes, continuously attracting new partners and best practices, which significantly enriches its research ecosystem.
Postgraduate students at Belgorod State University actively participate in various projects and scholarship initiatives. Their achievements in regional and federal competitions attest to the high calibre of scientific research being conducted. In 2024, 72 postgraduate students received personal scholarships from the Governor of the Belgorod Region; three were honoured with the Governor’s Scholarship named after Academician Vladimir Shukhov, and five students were awarded scholarships from the President of the Russian Federation for their research aligned with national scientific and technological priorities, defined by the Strategy of Scientific and Technological Development of the Russian Federation.
