In a fitting tribute to Russian Science Day, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov awarded 12 talented scientists from Belgorod for their contributions.
Three distinguished scientists from Belgorod State University have been honored with the prestigious Shukhov Prize, recognizing their exceptional contributions to scientific research.
In the Information Technology category, the Vladimir Shukhov Prize was awarded to Olga Ivashchuk, Head of the Department of Information and Robotic Systems at BelSU and a Doctor of Technical Sciences. She was recognized for her development of a prototype intelligent decision support system (IDSS) designed to adapt agricultural territories to the evolving challenges posed by climate change and human activities. This innovative system incorporates specialized intelligent functions that transform data on the interactions between biological and technological entities into scientifically grounded decisions for managing land productivity.
Within the Innovations in Medicine category, two BelSU researchers were celebrated for their achievements: Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor Irina Ponomarenko from the Department of Medical and Biological Disciplines, and Doctor of Medical Sciences and Professor Olga Lebedeva from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Their research focuses on predicting and addressing issues related to the female reproductive system.
Irina Ponomarenko’s groundbreaking diagnostic approach integrates findings from extensive genetic and epidemiological studies on prevalent diseases such as breast cancer, preeclampsia, and fetal growth restriction. Through her research, she has identified specific hereditary risk factors associated with disorders of the female reproductive system.
Olga Lebedeva specializes in miscarriage prediction. Utilizing insights from molecular genetic studies, she has developed an individualized method for forecasting non-developing pregnancies in their early stages. This method enables healthcare providers to identify at-risk patients and implement necessary treatments to prevent complications.
In a heartfelt message during the awards ceremony, Vyacheslav Gladkov congratulated all scientists in the Belgorod Region on the Day of Russian Science.
‘I am thrilled that, despite the challenging circumstances, we continue to prioritize scientific advancement. I hope that your remarkable projects will find practical applications in our economy. It is crucial for us to forge ahead, and we need innovative solutions to overcome current challenges. I am grateful that our scientists inspire young people to pursue careers in science. This is one of our significant achievements. You are the stars that children look up to,’ he stated, expressing his gratitude for their contributions and wishing them continued success.
For the record. Established by the Belgorod Region government in 2017, the annual Vladimir Shukhov Prize seeks to boost the region’s scientific, technical, and production potential, as well as to create a supportive atmosphere for new scientific discoveries.
