As part of the #Lecture project initiated by Russia’s Ministry of Education, a lecture was delivered by Elena Sherstyukova.
A captivating lecture on the novel "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" (German: Das Parfum: Die Geschichte eines Mörders) by Patrick Süskind took place at the media centre of Belgorod National Research University (BelSU). The lecture was given by Elena Sherstyukova, a candidate of philological sciences and Associate Professor in the Department of Romano-Germanic Philology and Intercultural Communication at the BelSU Institute of Intercultural Communication and International Relations. Sherstyukova highlighted that "Perfume" is one of the most widely read works globally.
She noted, “The novel addresses nearly all the pressing issues of our modern world: the influence of media, the state of contemporary science, the challenges of creativity and genius, and the creation of simulacra that replace reality, among others.”
According to the lecturer, Süskind employs the language of scents to depict our reality with unflinching directness and clarity, revealing its inherent ugliness and complexities. He invites readers to engage in dialogue, participate in active co-creation, maintain a critical perspective, and seek meaning in these challenging times. The lecture attracted a diverse audience, eager to delve into the themes presented. For those interested, a recording of the lecture is available in the official VKontakte group of Belgorod National Research University.
