The Russian Language Centre at Al-Kut University College in the Republic of Iraq has officially opened its doors, welcoming its first cohort of students in early February.
This initiative aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Russian language. The inaugural class consists of college students majoring in English, who will learn the fundamentals of Russian under the guidance of Marina Droga, PhD in Philology and Associate Professor at Belgorod State University’s Department of Russian Language, Professional Speech, and Intercultural Communication. Alhasan Abdulhussein Latef Alabedi, the head of the Russian Language Study Centre, will continue the instruction.
Marina Droga emphasized that the Centre is well-equipped for effective learning, featuring a variety of educational and methodological resources, including teaching materials developed by BelSU faculty. The walls are adorned with portraits of renowned Russian writers, creating an inspiring atmosphere for students.
From the very first days of classes, students have shown remarkable enthusiasm and engagement in the learning process.
The six-month course is designed to introduce participants to the basics of reading, writing, and speaking Russian, as well as essential grammar concepts. Additionally, students will immerse themselves in Russian culture. Upon successful completion of the program, each participant will receive an official certificate.
The Russian Language Centre was inaugurated on February 7, 2025, through the efforts of the Al-Kut University College management and with support from the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in the Russian Federation. The opening ceremony featured a delegation from Belgorod State University, including Natalia Zhukovskaya, Director of the International Cooperation Department; Marina Droga; and Mansur Ahmed T.A., the University Ambassador to the Middle East and North Africa.
Among the distinguished guests was Nadheer Jassim Mohammed Al-Obaidi, Attaché for Culture and Education at the Iraqi Embassy in Russia.
During the ceremony, Talib Zedan Al Musawi, Chairman of the Al-Kut College Council, highlighted the significance of this initiative. He noted that learning Russian not only opens doors to the rich tapestry of Russian culture but also fosters a deeper understanding of the complexities of the Russian soul.
