The exhibition “Petroglyphs and Rock Art of the Sahara Desert” has opened at the Vitaly Sobrovin Belgorod Gallery of Photographic Art.
International students from Belgorod National Research University (BelSU), accompanied by Natalia Girenko, curator of the African Community, attended this photography exhibition celebrating the unique culture of the Sahara Desert. Curated by Nikolai Sologubovsky, a researcher who has dedicated many years to studying Africa's culture and history, the exhibition showcases his extensive work resulting from meticulous research and expeditions to some of the most remote areas of the Sahara.
The students eagerly explored the photographs, recognizing familiar motifs and symbols that resonate with their own cultural heritage. Local television channels took the opportunity to interview these young individuals, whose roots trace back to the African continent. They shared their impressions and discussed how petroglyphs and rock art help them gain a deeper understanding of their ancestors’ culture and traditions.
Natalia Girenko emphasized the significance of such exhibitions in broadening students’ horizons and fostering intercultural dialogue. She noted that Nikolai Sologubovsky’s works are not merely photographs but valuable artefacts that allow viewers to connect with the distant past and appreciate the continuity of time.
