In the latest edition of the Times Higher Education 2026 international university rankings, Belgorod State University has successfully retained its position within the 1501+ category.
The number of universities participating in this prestigious ranking continues to rise. This year, a total of 3,118 institutions submitted applications, with 2,191 universities from 115 countries making it to the final list – 99 more than last year.
The top five spots in the world rankings remain dominated by institutions from the United States and the United Kingdom. Oxford University retains its position at the top for the tenth consecutive year, followed by Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton University, and Cambridge University, which share fourth place. Harvard University rounds out the top five. Notably, 80 Russian universities participated in this year's ranking, with 103 submitting applications.
Belgorod National Research University (BelSU), alongside 57 other Russian universities, is ranked in the 1501+ group. In the national context, it stands at 23 out of 80, a slight improvement from last year's position of 26 out of 81. BelSU’s overall performance score this year was between 10.3 and 27.2 points, compared to last year's range of 10.5 to 25.1 points. The university excelled particularly in the International Outlook category, scoring 40.6 points, though this was a decrease from last year's score of 43 points.
Here’s how BelSU performed across other ranking indicators:
– Technology Transfer: 34.9 points (up from 33.1 last year),
– Teaching: 21.8 points (down from 22.6 last year),
– Research Environment: 16.4 points (up from 15.3 last year),
– Research Quality: 11.1 points (down from 11.3 last year).
Overall, BelSU ranks in the third quartile of global universities for most indicators, with the exception of Research Quality, which falls into the fourth quartile.
