The Concert Hall at Belgorod State University was filled with joy as alumni, students, faculty, and staff gathered to celebrate a momentous occasion – the 80th anniversary of the Department of History and Philology.
A warm atmosphere enveloped the hall, reflecting the unity of those present. This significant event marked the establishment of the department in 1945 at the Stary Oskol State Teachers’ Institute, a transition that occurred during the war when the Belgorod Pedagogical Institute was relocated. Dean Elena Litovchenko remarked that the merger of the History and Philology departments in 2013 was not merely a new beginning but a restoration of historical justice.
Dean Litovchenko emphasized the crucial role of studying history, the Russian language, and literature in today’s world. She noted that the current Faculty of History and Philology is composed of individuals who honour tradition while embracing innovation. This blend serves as a catalyst for progress. The students are not just passive learners; they actively participate and excel in various competitions and olympiads.
The faculty maintains strong collaborations with prominent organizations, including the Russian Historical Society, the National Committee of Byzantinists of the Russian Federation, and the Society of Russian Literature, among others. These partnerships extend to educational institutions, museums, and archives throughout the Belgorod Region. The collaborative efforts aim to strengthen Russian spirituality and culture while uniting citizens around shared national values.
Throughout the evening, attendees felt a connection to a larger narrative. On stage, talented students, engaging faculty members, and cherished alumni shared their voices, humour, and heartfelt performances. Each act served as a vibrant illustration of the faculty's rich history – ranging from touching vocal performances to lively skits and musical pieces. Together, they turned the pages of their shared experience, celebrating with laughter, admiration, and pride.
“This day reaffirmed that our faculty is a unique place where past and present converge – a space that fosters respect for language and culture while nurturing true professionals,” concluded Elena Litovchenko, expressing gratitude to everyone who contributed to this unforgettable celebration.
