An educational event at Belgorod State University’s Institute of Pharmacy, Chemistry, and Biology featured a distinguished lecture by Professor Alexey Solovchenko from the Department of Bioengineering at Lomonosov Moscow State University.
As part of the initiative to enhance the Practical Biotechnology Master’s program under the 19.04.01 “Biotechnology” track, Professor Solovchenko’s visit was made possible through the federal project “Advanced Training and Retraining of Qualified Personnel in New Materials and Chemistry.”
Under the guidance of Irina Batlutskaya, Head of the BelSU Department of Biotechnology and Microbiology, the program aims to elevate educational standards in biotechnology. During his lecture, Professor Solovchenko engaged students in a discussion about the fundamental principles of cultivating phototrophic microorganisms in photobioreactors. Participants explored challenges related to scaling up cultures and the limitations affecting culture productivity, with a focus on optimal cell density and its interplay with lighting and mixing parameters.
In closing, Professor Solovchenko offered valuable insights on ensuring the stability and profitability of industrial crops while addressing common pitfalls encountered by biotechnologists working with microalgae cultures. Tatyana Glubsheva, Director of the BelSU Institute of Pharmacy, Chemistry, and Biology, encouraged students to embrace roles as researchers, managers, and entrepreneurs throughout this immersive learning experience.
Irina Batlutskaya expressed her gratitude to Professor Solovchenko for his engaging presentation, emphasizing the importance of a comprehensive understanding of entrepreneurial activities for fostering collaboration among researchers, managers, and entrepreneurs. As a token of appreciation, she presented him with a photograph of a plant native to the Belgorod Region that is listed in the Red Book.
