The festive events at Belgorod State University not only brought joy but also introduced international students to the rich culture and traditions of New Year’s celebrations in Russia.
The “New Year’s Kaleidoscope” event, organized for students in the Preparatory Department at Belgorod National Research University (BelSU), was a vibrant mix of knowledge, creativity, and fun. Marina Droga, Associate Professor of the Department of Russian Language, Professional Speech, and Intercultural Communication, delivered an engaging lecture that explored the history of New Year's celebrations in Russia. She discussed key characters, the symbolism behind Christmas tree decorations, and the cherished tradition of making a wish at midnight.
The theoretical insights quickly transitioned into practice during an interactive game, allowing students to fully immerse themselves in a genuine New Year’s party atmosphere. They collaborated to record a festive New Year's song for the preparatory department, filling the air with holiday spirit.
Following the lively activities, creativity took centre stage as international students enthusiastically crafted holiday cards under the guidance of their supervisors. These cards will serve as treasured keepsakes of their first Russian New Year celebration.
The festivities concluded with a special gift presentation, where each student received a sweet treat from Father Frost and the Snow Maiden.
“It’s important for us that students not only learn the language but also understand the cultural context,” noted Arsen Martirosyan, head of the BelSU Preparatory Department. “New Year is the most family-oriented and heart-warming holiday. Through its traditions, we can better understand each other's mind-sets and foster closer connections."
Martirosyan emphasized that events like these are crucial for helping international students adapt and engage culturally. They help bridge language and cultural gaps, creating an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding that undoubtedly enhances academic performance.
On New Year’s Eve, BelSU’s international students joined Rector Evgeniya Karlovskaya and Vice-Rector Nikolai Tsybulya for a visit to the main Christmas tree on Belgorod’s Sobornaya Square and a festive city event in the Lenin Park. During their outing, students shared their experiences of celebrating New Year in their home countries.
“I'm delighted that our students are actively integrating into Russian culture while also cherishing their roots and preserving their ancestral traditions,” wrote Karlovskaya on her Telegram channel. “We are especially grateful that the Belgorod Region Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov acknowledged our international students in his New Year’s greetings to Belgorod residents and guests. They love our country, appreciate the Belgorod region, and are celebrating the New Year with us.”| << Back to the list |
