A new phygital space has been inaugurated at the Svetlana Khorkina Educational and Sports Complex of Belgorod State University, featuring thematic zones that combine digital simulation with hands-on physical training.
The opening ceremony was attended by Rector of Belgorod National Research University (BelSU) Evgeniya Karlovskaya, vice-rectors, and directors of institutes and departments.
The specialised space is divided into several thematic zones. A drone racing simulator allows students to master basic aircraft control skills and practise assembling drones. Nearby, a Tactical Shooting area combines a Counter‑Strike 2 digital arena with laser tag. Students can learn drone piloting and improve their engineering skills to compete in phygital sports events and join the university’s national team. Mentors are students from the Institute of Engineering and Digital Technologies, who are winners and runners‑up of the regional stage of the All‑Russian Student League Drone Race.
Special attention is given to virtual reality (VR) tactical medicine. Participants use simulators to master practical skills in emergency medical care, supported by students from the Institute of Medicine and medical volunteers.
“The need for this field is undeniable – it is relevant and must be developed,” said Professor Andrey Yarosh, Director of the Institute of Medicine. “The university administration has created this space where students can master digital competencies and gain first aid skills.”
Phygital sports represent one of the most promising areas today. The combination of virtual reality and dynamic disciplines promotes the comprehensive development of young people, fostering teamwork, strategic thinking, and engineering skills alongside physical abilities. Anyone can visit the Svetlana Khorkina Sports Complex at their convenience and work through seven different training zones under the guidance of instructors.
BelSU Rector Evgeniya Karlovskaya noted that the phygital space can accommodate over three hundred students simultaneously.
“Phygital disciplines develop engineering thinking, enhance readiness for the challenges of modern life, and facilitate students’ comprehensive development,” she said. “Our goal is to ensure that every student visits this space and tests their abilities.”
The modern space is open seven days a week.
