In the build up to the start of 2014 Winter Olympics Olympic flame is making its journey from Olympia to Sochi. BelSU students, faculty and administrative staff members were proud to welcome it in Belgorod and at our University. Flaming Olympic torch was carried to the stage at Svetlana Khorkina Sports Complex by a Belgorod dweller Juri Sidorov.
A music, dance and entertaining performance was unfolded on the square in front of the Sports Complex. Thanks to mobile kitchen, action games like tug of war and makeshift skiing it was hard to be feeling cold though it was below zero in Belgorod. The Olympic flame welcoming party has quickly turned into a real town festival, including and friendly.
After BelSU welcoming part of torch relay was over, Oleg Polukhin, Rector of the University, handed the flame to another torchbearer Alexander Kovalenko.
The concluding speech for the ceremony was also carried by Oleg Polukhin:
Thirty-four years have passed between Moscow Summer Olympics and Sochi Winter Olympics during which time BelSU prepared about ten Olympic champions and medalists. We proudly boast the graduates Sveltana Khorkina, a two-times Olympic Champion, and London Summer Olympics champion in volleyball Sergey Tetiukhin, the leader of the Russia national volleyball team. Let’s continue to bear the banner of Russian sports high. Come on Russia!
