Based on the 2013 – 2014 academic year results, the 5th annual National Universities Ranking was announced by Interfax Information Services Group and the Echo of Moscow radio station.
The top position in the Rating was taken by Lomonosov Moscow State University. The runner-up is Saint-Petersburg State University, and National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute) was ranked 3rd.
As a year ago, Belgorod State National Research University achieved the same 37th place in the ranking list, only this year the total list of universities and institutes that took part in the Rating grew by 56.
161 institutions of higher education took part in the 2013 – 2014 National Universities Rating. This includes 74 classical universities, 29 national research universities, and 37 technical and technological universities.

The organizers have launched this project to develop mechanisms and procedures for independent appraisal of Russian universities and their educational programmes to grow competitive strength of Russian educational system, enhance the competitiveness of Russian scientific research and technology entrepreneurship, and to expand regional universities that are now regarded as structural base of Russia’s innovative Economy.
