The monument of Joseph Brodskiy was erected at the Literature Nobel Prize Winners Alley. The monument was made by sculptor from Belgorod, honored artist of Russia Anatoliy Shyshkov
The opening traditionally took place at the University’s 139th Anniversary day. It is the fifth monument on the Alley. All of them are made by one author and in a same style: great Russian writers Mikhail Sholokhov, Ivan Bunin, Boris Pasternak, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Joseph Brodskiy sit at the pedestals. Every pedestal bears illuminative and inspirational quote of the author.
The City authorities, clergy and university staff were presented at the opening. The Principal Oleg Polukhin reminded the audience that monument opening at the university’s “birthday” has become a significant city event. He also said, that there are no comparable projects in Russia and the world, and suggested to place the Alley in Guinness Book of World Records. But the main goal of the project is a popularization of the great writers’ works.
“We try to popularize the works of writers and poets monumentalized at the Belgorod State University’s grounds. It is our contribution to the preservation of Russian language and continuity of generations. It is important for every one of us and Russian in a whole not to lose a thread to the past. It is our strength”, – he said.
The ceremony was concluded by the touching poem, dedicated to Joseph Brodskiy by its author, professor of BelSU Pedagogic Institute Svetlana Kosharnaya, D.Litt.
