Professor Andrei Papkov, and Dr Denis Timiryayev joined scholars gathered at the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Slavic Studies in Moscow for a conference on 'The Intellectual Elite's Vision of Belarusian and Ukrainian Culture and Statehood from the 17th to the 20th Centuries'
Professor Papkov and Dr Timiryayev were participating in the conference due to their expertise in this complex subject. Issues of identity, ethnicity and culture have been an ever-present in the history of the region, and have never been as pertinent as they are at the moment. Studying the history of the period is, therefore, of great interest to people beyond academia. In recognition of this fact, and with our location near the Ukrainian border, BNRU has set up the Centre for Neighbourhood and Identity Studies, which aims at at enlightening debate and stimulating further study in this field. Attendance at this conference was in keeping with our commitment to this intellectual endeavour.
