This year's Competition, hosted by Belgorod State University, saw more than 250 participants from 4 to 86 years-old gather for the New Year festival, which was dedicated to the Region's 65th anniversary
Chess Grandmaster Alexander Ivanov, Director of the University's Centre for the Development of Intellectual Sports, was on hand to award prizes to the winners of the 15 tournaments that formed the Competition. The closing ceremony was addressed by Dr Svetlana Ostrikova, Vice-Rector for Educational and Youth Affairs, who conveyed an encouraging message from the Rector, Professor Igor Polukhin.
The show-piece event was the Speed-Chess Tournament, in which the best of our students was Vladimir Bazarov, who came third overall. Other performances of note were Viktor Kobzev, Dmitri Polunin and Anastasia Shaloputova, who were the next best placed students. All the participants received certificates from competition sponsors, the Belgorod Regional Sports and Physical Education Department, and the University supplied other rewards in the form of cups, statuettes and souvenirs.
