Belgorod State University has opened a large new facility that aims to become a Regional and national centre for the promotion of intellectual sports, on the 15th anniversary of the University Chess Club
The Centre for Intellectual Sports was officially opened by the students as Professor Oleg Polukhin, Rector of the University, and guests from local government and members of the public looked on. To an audience drawn from all those who love chess, draughts, board games and puzzles, the Rector explained why it was appropriate for the young players to open the Centre, saying that the University has listened to the demand and responded to it. Our University is a hub for intellectual sports in the city, and has many spaces where students can sit and play games between lectures. These games promote intelligence, logic, imagination and patience.
The new Centre is a temple to intellectual sports, and the walls are lined with awards won by the University, and the students and staff. The décor is chess themed, and the venue can hold up to 100 players at a time. There is even a break room attached, where parents can wait for their children, and players can grab a coffee. There are facilities for experts to deliver lectures on these fascinating sports.
Many of the guests were there to participate in the Belgorod State University Student Chess Tournament, a three day qualifier for the National Student Chess Championship.
