Belgorod State University's Centre for the Development of Intellectual Sports was the venue for the 5th annual 'Inter-Generation Cup'
The University teamed up with agricultural supplier 'BelSoy' and the Armed Forces Veteran Association Chess Club 'The Thinker', to run the competition, which also involved the Belgorod Chess Federation. The competition was opened by Dr Svetlana Ostrikova, Vice-Rector for Education and Youth Policy, and this year is dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Region.
The players are the best ranked in their age group, and totalled 24. They were divided into 8 teams of 3. The youngest player, Ivan Sergienko, is 8, and the oldest, Anatoly Matuzny, is 83. 8 of the 24 players are staff, students or alumni from our University. The tournament was played on 3 boards, and the winners were Andrei Uzhva, Andrei Elizarov, and Karen Petrosyan. Second places went to Alexander Ivanov, Alexander Slyunyaev, and Igor Morozov. Third places went to Alexander Bezukhov, Vladimir Bazarov, and Leila El Hammudani.
Prizes were handed out by Regional Deputy Vladimir Zatsepin, Honorary Chair of the Belgorod Chess Federation, and Vladimir Kushnarenko, co-owner of BelSoy. The cup will remain on display at the Centre.
