Professor Oleg Polukhin, Rector of Belgorod State University, was in Moscow at the Permanent National Exhibition Centre. There he chaired a conference on the new Regional Research Centres along with Mikhail Kotyukov, the Minister of Education and Science
President Putin has announced 15 Regional Research Centres focusing on different areas of the Russian economy. The Centres will coordinate efforts between local and Federal government, private business, and academic research initiatives. Belgorod, one of the first four Centres announced by the President, will be led by the Regional Governor, Evgeny Savchenko, and coordinated from our University. It is hoped that this coordinated effort will yield a sea change in the way innovation comes into the market, and will benefit the Region and the nation.
The meeting of Rectors was part of the Moscow International Educational Salon, held in mid-April. Professor Polukhin underlined the sense of basing these Research Centres in universities, as we have the resources, expertise, and structure to support such initiatives. Minister Kotyukov put the decision in context, saying that this was part of the overall effort to modernise and integrate the Russian economy, and harness the potential of Russian science.
