Belgorod State University's Trade Union took 15 of our international students to a conference in Tula aimed at discussing how to combat extremism. This was a poignant event, as many students came from war-torn countries themselves
The Federal Youth Agency (Rosmolodezh) sponsored the conference, which was held on the campus of Tula State University. Dr Elena Nazarenko, Director of our Centre for Cross-Cultural Communication, led the group, which included students from Syria, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and the Donetsk People’s Republic. The highlight of the event was a meeting with His Excellency Dr Mohammad Latif Bahand, Afghanistan's ambassador to Russia, and Sultan Akif Shah, the Afghan Cultural Attaché. Dr Nazarenko had the chance to showcase the work of her Centre, which coordinates most of the activity in the University concerned with integrating international students.
Integration and friendship were the overriding themes, with two of our students, Yevgenia Grigoryants, and Sajid Khadiri, picking up awards for photos entitled 'We Are One Family!' and 'Kindness Will Save the World'. A number of our students also put on a musical number at the closing show.
Our University and Trade Union strive to give students an opportunity to travel within Russia and abroad, where possible. We believe these experiences are valuable in themselves, and provide students with additional life skills.
