REC “The NRU “BelSU” Botanical Garden” breeders to collect seeds of the Red Book Pulsatilla patens flowers to create a collection
Spring flowers listed in the Red Data Book of Russia, bloom in the botanical garden. This beautiful and hardy flower has been known to gardeners since the Middle Ages. It is also known as the Eastern pasqueflower. Currently due to man`s fault the population of Pulsatilla patens is declining. However, the breeders of the Belgorod State University Botanical Garden decided to cultivate Pulsatilla patens and make a collection of different species.
“The timing of Pulsatilla patens bloom allows collecting a set of successive flowering perennials. Some Pulsatilla patens bloom in April, others in May, and some enter the flowering phase in summer,” said Mikhail Tretyakov, head of the REC “The NRU “BelSU” Botanical Garden” Laboratory of Genetics and Plant Breeding. Most plants that belong to the Pulsatilla patens genus are extremely valuable and are listed in the Red Book. In the wild, it is prohibited not only to dig out, but also pick their flowers”.
