Three distinguished scientists from Belgorod State University have been recognized for their exceptional contributions to scientific research with the prestigious Vladimir Shukhov Award.
The awards were presented by Yuri Klepikov, Chairman of the Belgorod Regional Duma, during a ceremony attended by Rector Evgeniya Karlovskaya and Vice-Rector for Science-Intensive Production Development Ignat Ignatenko. The awardees included two Doctors of Science and one Candidate of Science from BelSU, all of whom secured first place in their respective categories.
Professor Mikhail Churnosov, Head of the Department of Medical and Biological Disciplines at the Institute of Medicine and a Doctor of Medical Sciences, received the award in the Medicine, Pharmacy, and Bioengineering category. His ground-breaking research focused on diagnosing genetic risk factors for socially significant diseases within the Belgorod region's population. Supported by the Priority-2030 strategic development program, Churnosov and his team conducted extensive studies that identified critical genetic factors linked to various health issues, including arterial hypertension, peptic ulcer disease, knee osteoarthritis, breast cancer, uterine fibroids, and endometrial hyperplasia – a condition that can lead to infertility. Additionally, he uncovered maternal genetic factors associated with low birth weight and short stature in newborns.
In the Information Technology category, Alexander Zhikharev, Director of the Institute of Engineering and Digital Technologies, was honoured for his work on Domestic Software for Modelling Complex Systems. Zhikharev’s innovations include advanced registration systems, facial recognition technologies, and an automated unmanned system designed for crop irrigation.
